A client came to Cebu this December from New York. He is what the term loosely describes as an "ABC" American Born Chinese. It was his second time to be in Cebu. After a heavy day he asked me to bring him to a Chines Restaurant. I have never been to any good one worst to any authentic one. Dimsum break was the most authentic one that I went to, so far as my "Chinese stock" knowledge is concern. You don't bring a client to mediocre places, I thought. I told him that I do not know any authentic ones. I have been to some places but I admitted that I am not the right person. I even suggested Dimsum break which he laughed at because it is for breakfast. He got his phone and searched. Then he mentioned to take him to Majestic in Ayala.
Looking back, I went to Majestic and ordered the usual: pancit, siomai, chicken feet, yang-chow rice and spring roll. So this kind of ordered meal did not give me the confidence when my client asked me to bring him there. Hey, I did not know.
So we went there. Being Chinese he ordered and I waited. What came out first was the green seafood soup. The color was kinda weird as the name suggest, it was green. I have to admit I was a little bit hesitant. Tasted it and went to food heaven. You feel the seafood flavor with the bits and pieces that is mixed into it. Have you ever tried a bulalo soup and felt your soul almost revived by the steaming flavor of the beef. This one was it, except that you can feel the ocean reviving you! Am I gonna say, amazing again! Yes!!! This soup is good after a hard day drained by work induced torture. The flavors were bursting in my mouth. Wide eyed I looked at my client and said, "this is goooood!" More than! The rest of the order was: steamed fish fillet, kangkong garlic, yang-chow rice, braised beef in clay pot and Hong Kong beef curry. It was an experience worth going back. Definitely!
Lesson learned: if you want to eat Chinese bring a Chinese friend who knows.
Thanks!
